East Nine Royal Tombs or Donggureung is Joseon's the biggest royal tombs group, which was built over 450 years, meaning "nine tombs in the east." Starting with King Taejo's Geonwolleung(健元陵), who founded Joseon in 1408 (the 8th year of King Taejong's reign), King Munjong's Hyeollueng(顯陵), King Seonjo's Mongneung(穆陵), King Hyeonjong's Sungneung(崇陵), Queen Jangryeol's Hwireung(徽陵), Queen Danui's Hyeoreung(惠陵), King Yeongjo's Wolleung (元陵), and King Heonjong's Gyeongneung(景陵) were created in turn. Depending on the number of tombs at the time, it was called East Five Royal Tombs(Dongoreung) and East Seven Royal Tombs(Dongchilneung), but in 1855 (the 6th year of King Cheoljong's reign), Sureung(綏陵) of King Munjo moved here and became the current East Nine Royal Tombs(Donggureung).
